SPMA Educational Scholarship

The SPMA Educational Scholarship was established in 2011 as a testament to the commitment the SPMA of BC has to its members and the further education of their children.

Description and Eligibility Criteria

One $1,000 post-secondary tuition-credit scholarship will be made available by competition each year to the children of employees of a member company in good standing of the SPMA of BC. Parental employee must have been employed a minimum of 12 months by the member company as of the award application deadline. In addition, the company must have been a member of the SPMA of BC for a minimum of 12 months as of the award application.

The SPMA Educational Scholarship is intended to encourage the undertaking of post-secondary studies at any public Canadian university or college in any field of study. Children of the selection committee are considered eligible to apply; however, the parent of the child would not be eligible to cast a vote in the selection process.

Selection Criteria

The award will be based on satisfactory academic achievements (minimum B average or equivalent) on the latest transcript, personal qualities and demonstrated community involvement.

The award will be made by and at the sole discretion of the selection committee.

Applications

A complete application consists of the application form, a copy of the latest transcript, and a one-page essay describing personal qualities (may include but not limited to work ethic, leadership potential, environmental consciousness, good character, awards received through competition, etc.) and how the candidate has been involved in the community. No additional pages may be attached.

Deadline

The annual deadline for when all these items must be received by the SPMA of BC is June 1st. Late applications cannot be accepted in consideration of fairness to other candidates. The selection committee reserves the right to require a candidate to furnish additional information or references.

Selection of Successful Candidates and Payment of Scholarship

A decision will usually be made by mid-July. The results will include one alternative recipient for in the event that the scholarship is declined by the candidate to whom it is originally offered. The scholarship must be used in the fall of the year of application (i.e. it cannot be deferred). All candidates will be notified by email of their application status by the end of July.

The scholarship will normally be paid in one lump sum directly to the college or university to be credited to tuition. Payment of the scholarship is conditional upon receipt of satisfactory evidence that the candidate has been admitted to the college or university in respect of which the scholarship application was submitted (i.e. submission of a copy of the acceptance letter).
